Environmental Management

To help empower local citizens in communities to assess, plan and move forward according to their shared values, goals and aspirations towards sustainability, ZIEM developed and deployed several rapid resource assessment approaches.

 

In Mining towns Chambishi- Kalulushi District for example, ZIEM developed a tool for an Environmental Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for local residents to analyze pollution and determine the environmental and social impacts of existing assets, visualize and plan the next steps.

 

An adaptive, flexible, and integrated approach to community sustainability planning and action is ZIEM’s environmental management model. In fact, with its interdisciplinary essence, the model addresses Social Economic, Health, sustainable livelihoods and justice and integrity culturally appropriate for local customs and culture.

 

Zambia Institute of Environmental Management is currently implementing the following programmes in Environmental Management:

WATER POLLUTION

 

ZIEM is currently implementing a water pollution monitoring and management project in Chambishi, Copperbelt province of Zambia, called Musakashi Water Pollution Project with support from Civil Society Environment Fund. The catchment river has been polluted by the effluents from NFCA mine in the Local area.

ZIEM is also preparing the implementation of a project on water pollution monitoring and management of the Kansanshi River in Solwezi which has been polluted by the mines activites in the area with support from various partners.

AIR POLLUTION

 

ZIEM implemented an air pollution monitoring and management project in Mufulira in Kankoyo Township, Kitwe and Lusaka with support from the Berkeley Air Monitoring Group of California USA

 

ZIEM implemented an Ambient Air Pollution modelling in Kitwe in Nkana, Wusakile and Chamboli Townships.

ZIEM implemented a project on Indoor Air Pollution in Lusaka from the use of charcoal using Keeping Performance Tests (KPT) tools with support from the California University Berkeley Air Monitoring group.

 

ZIEM implemented a project on the energy efficiency of cook stoves in Katete District, Eastern Province of Zambia and is exploring effective partnership with Global Alliance for Clean Cook stoves (GACCS).

 

Furthermore, ZIEM also carries out monitoring activities on the management of River lines.
