Environmental Impact Assement (EIA)

EIA is the process of identifying, predicting, evaluating and mitigating all relevant effects of development proposals on the environment prior to major decisions being taken.

It involves thorough screening and scoping of the proposed project, to ensure that all aspects are completely taken care of.

EIAs are conducted on large projects involving large communities. For small localized projects, an ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT BRIEF (EPB) is conducted.

Why Conduct an EIA/EPB?

The EIA process is a statutory requirement as outlined by SI No. 28 of 1997, of the Environmental Management Act (EMA) of 2011.

EIA;

  • Gives information of all possible significant environmental impacts

  • Helps to prepare for and avoid occurrence of disaster due to the project operation.

  • Having an EIA is the best way of ensuring that all stakeholders in a development activity are satisfied.

  • Local people affected by the proposal;

  • The proponents and all beneficiaries of the project

  • Government agencies, e.g ZEMA

  • NGOs and Interest groups such as donors, the private sector, and academics

 

Environmental Management Systems (EMS)

EMS refers to the management of an organization’s environmental programs in a comprehensive, systematic, planned and documented style.

ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS are levels of quality accepted as the norm by the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA), and the international bodies such as Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
